The effect of fluid flow on corrosion, or flow accelerated corrosion, is defined by mass transfer and wall shear stress parameters existing in the water phase contacting the solid wall. Jet impingement offers an experimental method to measure the effect of these parameters on corrosion. Jet impingement testing is effective in studying flow effects on corrosion and corrosion inhibitor performance. It allows both in- depth scientific investigations and routine testing, and is particularly applicable to simulate disturbed flow conditions. The application of jet impingement to flow accelerated is discussed, the basis of the disturbed flow correlation is developed, and a procedure is described to relate the results of jet impingement corrosion tests directly to corrosion in an operating system. This requires accurate determination of the wall shear stress on the test sample of the jet impingement electrode. The methods used to accurately obtain the relationship of the wall shear stress ('rw) on the test sample to the jet flow rate (R) for specific jet systems are developed and discussed.
