EPA-Industry Center for Verification of Pollution Prevention Technologies

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) have established a center for the metal finishing industry called the "Environmental Technology Verification for Metal Finishing Pollution Prevention Technologies (ETV-MF) Center." EPA's Environmental Technology Verification Program is managed as part of the President's Environmental Technology Initiative by EPA's Office of Research and Development and was created to substantially accelerate the entrance of new environmental technologies into the domestic and international marketplace. It is intended to supply technology buyers, consulting engineers, states, and EPA regions with high quality data on the performance of new technologies. The goal of the ETV-MF Center is to verify the performance of innovative, commercial-ready pollution prevention technologies designed to improve industry performance and achieve cost-effective solutions. Test plans are developed cooperatively between CTC, EPA, and the technology supplier. Verification testing is conducted under strict EPA quality guidelines in metal finishing shops under actual operating conditions. Verification reports are prepared and made available to metal finishers, consulting engineers, and environmental permitting agencies. This paper will discuss the details of the cooperative program, how the program is guided by an industry/government Stakeholder Advisory Group, and how technologies are identified for verification. The processes for developing test plans and reporting results will be presented, as well as how the program can benefit pollution prevention technology suppliers and users through third party objective verification. Results of recent verification tests will be discussed along with the status of additional technologies recently submitted for testing.
