Development and Commercialization of Raffinate hydroconversion -- A New Technology to Manufacture High Performance Basestocks for Crankcase and Other Applications

Automobile manufacturers needs for improved fuel economy and lower emissions require that future crancase motor oils have both lower viscosity and lower volatility. Exxon has developed a proprietary technology called Raffinate Hydroconversion that has exceptional flexibility to make higher quality basestocks with superior viscosity-volatility characteristics and high saturates. This technology has been developed to fit into an existing solvent technology lube plant at low cost. A project to make these oils has been installed at Exxon's Baytown Texas refinery.
