Recently, many grades of new sinter-hardenable materials containing varying levels of chromium, molybdenum, nickel and copper have been introduced by powder suppliers. However, selecting a sinter-hardenable grade for a given application can be confusing. This paper tries to sort out various options by comparing physical and mechanical properties of the best materials from some of the main powder suppliers. Static and dynamic properties are evaluated after sinter-hardening at optimal cooling rate along with effects of density and graphite. Comparison is also made to non sinter-hardenable grades processed by conventional heat treatment. Results are interpreted in terms of microstructural characterization.
