We have described a means for adaptive dispersion compensation based on an electro-optically chirped AWG. In contrast to standard geometric optics based formalisms, the spectral domain approach featured in this analysis yields physically-realisable device parameters subject to appropriate dimensional considerations. In particular, a LiNbO{sub}3 based device requires < 10 V for a 10 μm waveguide thickness and active region length < 9mm. It is anticipated that such devices will find application in future dense WDM networks.
