Hypoproteinemia (total plasma protein < 6.0 gm/dl) can be caused by over hydration, decreased production of plasma proteins, or increased loss of plasma proteins. Over hydration usually causes a decrease in the PCV as well as a decrease in the TP. Hyperproteinemia (total plasma protein > 8.0 gm/dl) can occur with dehydration, increased age, neoplasia, or acute or chronic inflammation. Dehydration usually also causes an increase in the PCV. False increases in plasma proteins determined by refractometry can occur with lipemia, hemolysis, and the presence of Heinz bodies.
