Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a country of about 1.1 million km~2. The population is about 53 million, growing at the rate of 3.2% per year. Ethiopia extends from 4°N to 15°N latitude, and elevation ranges from below sea level to well over 3,000 m above sea level. The country also has diverse physical features that cause a variety of climatic conditions. The result is a nation of great agroecological diversity. About 40.5% of the country is arid and semiarid, and insufficient rainfall is the most critical factor limiting agricultural production. The remaining 59.5% of Ethiopia's land area ranges from semimoist to humid. Here, production of annual crops dominates. Land degradation is a very important constraint to agricultural production in this part of the country.
