Situated on the East African Coast, between latitude 1° and 12° S and longitude 30° and 40° E), Tanzania Mainland has a total area of 945,000 km~2 and a land area of about 883,000 km~2, excluding water areas such as parts of Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Nyasa. Protected wildlife areas cover 248,000 km~2 (30%) of the land area. The topography is varied and includes vast semiarid plains, numerous plateaus and highlands, lake shore areas, and a coastal zone. Natural pasture or savanna woodland cover the major part of the country used for agriculture and livestock production.
