Computer software coding experiences a high rate of technology change. Software obsolescence is a growing challenge. The pervasive and ubiquitous nature of software means that rapid changes and consequential legacy implications are serious issues of concern, especially for highly computerized business processes. Innovative approaches are necessary to mitigate the effect of software obsolescence on the performance of automated business operations. Extrapolating from semi-structured survey of software programmers, this paper discusses component-oriented re-engineering as a method for extending the useable life of software in the short to medium term, especially in instances where embedded code has become obsolete, and the costs may be prohibitive for investing in new software applications, platforms and systems.
