The purpose of this paper is to show how additive manufacturing technologies - such as PolyJet 3D printing - can lead to significantly reduced production costs of e-mobility components. First, the current market situation will be portrayed in order to assess developments and resulting challenges which are likely to be faced by the automotive industry in the near future. Also the necessity of e-mobility due to emission regulations will be further explained. To make e-mobility affordable, the production costs need to be reduced, which can be achieved by using new production technologies and leveraging innovative processes. This paper primarily deals with the production of thermoforming molding tools, using a PolyJet 3D printer. Therefore, different requirements regarding adequate molding tools will be derived and the application of PolyJet 3D printing will be discussed. Finally, printable materials will be presented followed by proof of overall feasibility.
