There is a clinical need to improve the sensitivity and objectivity of assessment during clinical evaluation of upper extremity function in pediatric patients with orthopaedic disabilities. To address this need, consumer technology and custom software are combined to develop a portable, cost-effective markerless motion analysis system, which is shown to be accurate in kinematic joint angle detection when evaluated against goniometric methods. A functional assessment activity protocol is described and normal pediatric population studied to allow statistical determination of key indicators of activity performance, which are used to develop automated scoring algorithms. Computed scores can detect statistically significant individual differences even in the normal population. Markerless motion capture introduces quantitative data to standardized functional assessments without increasing the burden on patients and caregivers.
