The ocean dynamic environmental conditions are important for theconstruction design. Although typhoons principally govern extremevalue metocean design loading, internal solitary waves (ISWs) alsopresent substantial engineering concerns. ISWs with characteristic oflarge amplitude induce strong vertical mixing, vertical shear ofhorizontal velocity and make notable impacts on the safety of the oceanengineering, oil drilling platforms and submarine pipelines. Accordingto the observed data from a submerged buoy system at Liuhua area inthe northern South China Sea (SCS), the characteristics of internalsolitons, such as amplitude, current speed, duration and shear velocityhave been studied in this paper. The results can provide a reference andtechnical support for the design and construction in SCS.
