Epistemic Uncertainty Stemming from Measurement Processing - A Case Study of Multiphase Shock Tube Experiments

Shock tube experiments conducted at the Multiphase Shock Tube facility at Sandia National Laboratories are studied from an uncertainty quantification perspective. Experimental setup and measurement processing methods are presented for uncertainty quantification in simulation validation. The experiment studies a particle curtain being impinged by a planar shock. Schlieren and X-ray imaging techniques are used to track the effects on the particle curtain. The image processing is studied to understand how measurement processing may affect experimental results. Quantities of interest are selected from the experimental results with simulation validation goals in mind. Additionally, experimental limitations are quantified to provide a collective representation of uncertainty stemming from measurement processing and that from experimental setup.
