Iodine postmilking teat disinfectants have proven to be an important tool for mastitis control in dairy herds. Historically, teat disinfectants have played an important role in the control of contagious pathogens, which are transmitted during milking.As the prevalence of contagious pathogens was maintained at manageable levels, modern dairies started to observe a higher prevalence of mastitis caused by environmental pathogens. Barrier teat disinfectants may offer extra protection in preventing new intramammary infections in the period between milkings. Recently, Buchalova & Rauer (2013) showed that after one hour of dipping, more than double iodine could be recovered from teats when using a novel iodine barrier teat disinfectant compared to an existing one, effectively extending the germicidal properties on teats. The goal of this study was to determine the field efficacy and safety of this new post-milking barrier teat disinfectant in a commercial dairy.
