Tylvalosin (TVN) is a second generation macrolide antibiotic for oral use with in vitro activity against Gram-positive bacteria, mycoplasma, and some Gram-negative bacteria, including Lawsonia intracellular is) Tylvalosin is rapidly absorbed and widely distributed to tissues. In vitro studies have shown that tylvalosin accumulates inside a number of mammalian cell types, including gut epithelial cells, at concentrations exceeding those in blood.2 Tylvalosin and its primary metabolite 3-AT are actively secreted into bile. High drug concentrations in the bile and intestinal contents are important for clinical efficacy in enteric infections. Aivlosin~R Water Soluble Granules has recently been approved by the FDA for the control of porcine proliferativeenteropathy (PPE) associated with Lawsonia intracellularis when administered at 50 ppm tylvalosin for 5 consecutive days. The objective of these studies was to evaluate the effectiveness of an in-feed formulation of tylvalosin (Aivlosin Type A MedicatedArticle) against Lawsonia intracellularis.
