To meet the increasingly stricter SO2 emission regulations, most new constructed Claus plants are nowadays equipped with a hydrogenation type of tail gas treating unit (TGTU). Even existing plants are being refurbished to be equipped with a hydrogenation type TGTU. In the field, trends are towards the use of low temperature hydrogenation type TGTUs. The low temperature operation puts special demands on the catalyst that is employed. Anew generation highly active titania-based tail gas catalyst was developed that offers a significantly improved low temperature performance compared with the alumina-based catalysts that are available on the market. Additionally, the titania-based tail gas hydrogenation catalyst offers significant operational benefits in terms of startup, resistance to gas contaminants and lifetime, which makes it also highly suitable for high temperature hydrogenation applications that suffer from insufficient efficiency. The more challenging operational circumstances, the larger the benefits this catalyst can offer.
