When it comes to treating odors emanating from municipal wastewater facilities, many designers spend a great deal of effort searching for the elusive “magic bullet”. The magic bullet in this case is one system or device that can effectively treat any and all odors produced by the wastewater process. Likewise, many vendors of odor control systems tout their product as that one answer to all of the municipality’s odor problems. If there is one thing that Calgon Carbon Corporation has learned after participating in the municipal wastewater odor control business for thirty years, it is that there remains to this day no one system or technology that can solve every odor problem every time. This does not mean however that some odor problems need to go untreated. What is does mean is that the solution to some odor problems will require a more comprehensive approach. This can mean combining two or more systems or technologies to fully treat a problem, as was done at the Massillon, OH WWTP. This is what we call the Integrated Systems Approach for Total Odor Solutions.
