The use of an electromagnetic method for nondestructive evaluation of metallic strip gratings as base elements in flexible printed circuits as well as carbon fibers reinforced plastics composites is proposed; the method is based on the apparition of the evanescent modes in slits as well as in the carbon fibers interspaces if the sample is excited with a TM_z polarized electromagnetic wave. The evanescent modes detection is made using metamaterials conical Swiss roll type. The method allows the high precision determination and localization of the metallic strips interruption and carbon fibers layout respectively, as well as the existence of delamination due to impact with low energy (6-12J). As surface plasmon polaritons can be localized in the lateral walls of the silver strip grating, this device could be used as a biosensor.
