Meeting the challenge of High Fidelity Complex Sensor Simulations in Interoperable Environments

Sensor simulations are facing a recurring challenge. They must provide high fidelity sensor simulations at resolutions that could only be dreamed of a few years ago, while the size of the gaming areas and the number of simulated entities have exploded. Faced with this dilemma, sensor simulation designers need to increase the required fidelity for the elements that can be perceived by trainees while avoiding creating non-harmonization with other participants in the same training exercise. To achieve this level of fidelity, elements related to the terrain (including cultural features) and entity positions must be the same for all systems. This can be achieved through the use of a common database approach, as for example, by using the CDB standard. For entities or elements of special interest, local enhancement through specific signatures required for high fidelity models can provide high fidelity sensor simulation and still maintain harmonization with other systems.
