Titanium (Ti) is in widespread use as implant material. There are however several aspects to keep in mind which influence its clinical application. First, the interface between the material surface and the host tissue has to facilitate optimal implant ingrowth by attracting osteoblasts and other cells. Second, the growth of bacteria on the implant surface should be suppressed as much as possible to prevent infection-related implant failure and other complications. Both of these goals can be achieved by different surface modifications. In previous studies, several surface treatments based on low-temperature plasma processes were evaluated and found to result in surfaces with cell-adhesive respectively anti-bacterial properties.
