Diagnostic accuracy of planar skeletal scintigraphy in mandibular asymmetry using a new reference

This study is aimed to develop a new reference for assessment of condylar activity in patients with mandibular asymmetry using our retrospective data. From 1990 to 2006, patients presented with unilateral condylar hyperplasia were recruited for the retrospective study. The clinical / radiographic records, and scinitgraphic findings were studied to identify the inactive group. The relationship between patients' age and uptake on the contralateral normal condyle was quantified for regression analysis and building of a new reference. This new reference is used for prospective analysis of patients with mandibular asymmetry from 2007 to 2009. Their condylar activity status were checked based on clinical, radiographic and dental model analysis. The new reference was applied with the sensitivity and specificity checked. Results: 91 and 22 patients were recruited for (i) retrospective and (ii) prospective analysis respectively. Linear relationship was observed between patients' age and the activity (R2=0.66). A new reference was developed with reasonable sensitivity (77%) and specificity (67%).
