Clinical Significance of Cortactin and Cyclin D1 Expression in Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Tongue

Cortactin and cyclin D1 play an important role in tumor invasion and metastasis. To evaluate cortactin and cyclin D1 expression and to clarify its clinical significance in squamous cell carcinomas of the tongue (SCCOT), 39 cases of SCCOT were evaluated retrospectively. Local recurrence was recognized in seven cases, and regional lymph node metastasis was recognized in 11. Expression of cortactin and cyclin D1 was evaluated immunohistochemically, and analyzed in correlation with clinicopatho-logical features. Increased expression of cortactin was seen in diffuse invasion types, and overexpression of cyclin D1 was recognized in the majority of cases with local recurrence. Overexpression of cortactin and cyclin D1 may be associated with tumor invasion and matastasis in SCCOT.
