A STUDY ON THE ESTIMATION OF DISCOMFORT GLARE FOR LED LUMINAIRES

It is difficult to apply conventional discomfort glare indices (UGR, VCP, etc.), which are calculated using the average luminance of a luminaire with uniform glare, for the Light-Emitting Diode (LED) luminaire with non-uniform luminance. Therefore, in this study, subject appraisal of discomfort glare was evaluated based on the Unified Glare Rating (UGR) to find the difference between luminaires with uniform luminance and those with non-uniform luminance. Luminaires with same average luminance and different maximum and minimum luminance (one luminaire with uniform luminance and two luminaires with non-uniform luminance) were used as glare sources. Fixed solid angle and position index were used and background luminance and light source luminance were varied. Subjects' appraisal was made using a rating scale that measured how much comfort or discomfort they felt under the given circumstances. Based on the result of the experiment, it was identified that LED luminaire with non-uniform luminance caused more discomfort than those with uniform luminance. In addition, the greater the interval of the LED elements was, the higher the glare of the source was. The same result was applied for the background luminance.
