The optimization of chemical composition with appropriate heat treatments was tried to develop a significantly reduced Mo, V, and Cr containing low alloy cast steel for automobile blanking, drawing, and trimming dies, possessing shorter production time and lower manufacturing cost as well as maintaining working performances compared to the traditional die materials. The effects of Si content on combinations of important properties such as toughness, hardness, hardenability, and resistance to softening on tempering in addition to strength increment were systematically investigated. In order to evaluate the applicability as the insert of cold pressing die, the mechanical properties were measured after annealing treatment, quenching and tempering (Q/T) treatment, and flame hardening, respectively.
