The Evaluation of the Renewable Energy Sources in Harmony with the European Union Directive 2001/77/EC in European Union and Turkey

The new global energy policy comprising of "Sustainable Development" is based on environmentally sound energy sources that have strong impact on social development and environmental protection. This presents a requirement of national and international renewable energy policy directed toward the implementation of these renewable energy sources. Turkey has a high potential of renewable energy. Having an emerging and rapidly growing economy, Turkey at the same time is facing a rising growth in its demand for energy. Hence, energy has emerged as an important factor influencing Turkish internal and foreign policy. The ratio of the renewable energy sources to the global total energy usage is 17% according to the REN21 in the year 2005. The laws and the regulations, the tax reduction for encouraging the people to use renewable energy sources for the protection of the environment are derived all over the world. The European Union announced directives for environmental protection one of which is about renewable energy sources 2001/77/EC. The overlapping of the existing laws and regulations with the European Union directives plays an important role in the period of Turkey’s European Union membership. In this study, the critical need for market and policy support with respect to EU directives is defined.
