摘要

These findings suggest that biomaterial surface chemistry plays a significant role in modulating the type and quantity of interaction occurring between adherent monocytes/macrophages and proximal lymphocytes at the biomaterial interface. Therefore, material effects on monocyte/macrophage adhesion, activation, and fusion, as well as corresponding lymphocyte activity may equally be results of material-induced cytokine expression and direct material/cell interactions. Material-specific results confirm previous studies, and demonstrate that hydrophilic surfaces appear capable of muting paracrine and juxtacrine signaling pathways used to excite proximal lymphocytes by initial hydrophilic inhibition of monocyte/macrophages adhesion and activation. Furthermore, ionic surface chemistries invoke a more complex mechanism of interaction with proximal cell populations.
