The creation of this hybrid tissue engineered construct, which is primarily cellular and is reinforced with an elastomeric fiber net, may offer a significant advancement over current tissue engineering approaches. High cell densities could facilitate the development of functional connections between cells and provide a construct appropriate for soft tissue replacement. The technology developed could be applicable to the engineering of conduit structures such as a tissue engineered blood vessel.
