In this paper we report recent results towards the development of microstructured fiber sensors to enable facile detection of chemical and biological species. We have demonstrated the ability to detect species chemisorbed at the air-silica interface of microstructured fibers. Based upon this initial work, we have undertaken the task of chemically modifying the surface to attach Au nanoparticles to the surface to allow detection via surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of chemical or biological species which are attached to the surface. Au nanoparticles with an average particle size of 30 nm~2 have been successfully attached to the surface and initial Raman spectroscopy studies show an enhancement of the Raman cross-section.
