A theoretical framework for modal interference in two mode fibres and validating experiments are presented. Aim of the work is to predict power fluctuations due to modal noise at misaligned connections. Worst cases caused by Mode Power Distribution and modes orientation are studied. The retrieved modal noise penalties, confirmed by transmission experiments at 1 Gbit/s and 125Mbit/s, can be utilized in the well-known link model [5] used in GBit Ethernet standard to show which distances can be supported at 125 Mbit/s and 1.25 Gbit/s in these worst-case scenarios.
