As the primary investigation of the spontaneous power cell using porous carbon support(SPOC) we proposed, evaluation of the water absorbability of the porous carbons and the cellperformance of the test cell were carried out. The absorbability of water was measured fortwo sorts of porous carbon prepared. Using one of the porous carbons as support, the test cellwas fabricated and the performance was evaluated as the spontaneous power cell withdifferent concentrations of the methanol solutions and at different arrangement of the cell. Thevertical arrangement exhibited the better performance than the horizontal one, and showedmaximum power density of 1mW/cm 2 at 10M methanol and room temperature. The methanolconcentration corresponds to the stoichiometric ratio of the anodic reaction gave the bestperformance within the range measured suggesting that the porous carbon support played arole to reduce the methanol crossover.
