In this paper, we report on field evaluation results on 4-fiber ribbon SZ stranding optical fiber cable, containing both standard single mode G.652 fiber and non-zero dispersion G.655 fiber installed in underground ducts (information box). We measured the optical fiber cable performance over a period of 11 days. The optical attenuation and splice loss were measured at 3 wavelengths. The PMD was measured over the 50 km network length every hour during the entire testing period. For the purpose of characterizing and understanding the environmental conditions, we measured the actual temperature as a function of time both in the underground duct and on the ground in proximity to the duct. We also report on the correlation between the environmental conditions and the PMD performance of installed cable using simultaneous measurements of several optical performance characteristics for verifying the mechanism of PMD variation in the field condition.
