Diversion in Rural Ontario - Success!

The Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre is located in the heart of Eastern Ontario, Canada in Renfrew County. While many Canadian Urban Centres debate on the best methods to divert its wastes or ship them to neighbouring communities, the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre has established and is fulfilling its mandate "To Walk Lightly on the Environment". The Centre has developed, constructed and commissioned a Material Recycling Facility, Source Separated Composting Facility, Construction and Demolition Facility and enhanced the existing Household Hazardous Waste Facility. This facility provides an advanced waste management system which allows residents to divert more than 50 percent of their waste from a quickly depleting landfill. Studies show that participation is high and has a potential to achieve over 80 percent diversion using best management practices.
