The MACT Rule puts a high priority on minimizing exceedances and many units will need combustion control enhancements to meet the Rule. In situ oxygen analyzers can give 1-second response times. An alternative process variable for fast incineration combustion control is gas temperature, which can be indicated almost instantly by an optical pyrometer. The gas temperature, combined with oxygen concentration, can provide fast control of incineration combustion conditions to minimize CO or THC exceedances. If needed, direct oxygen injection can provide a final ensurance that the oxygen level is kept above the key minimum level to maintain good combustion conditions. Reduced AWFCOs can pay off in increased on-feed time that more than pays for the enhanced control system.
