ENERGY SAVING IN THERMAL VACUUM TEST

When the shrouds of a thermal vacuum chamber must reach temperatures lower than 200 K, the thermo-regulation is usually carried out by the circulation of gaseous nitrogen or flooding with liquid nitrogen; in this second case, using heaters (calrod), it is possible to modulate the thermal flow. Both modes imply a high consumption of liquid nitrogen and of power energy. This paper proposes a modality of thermal vacuum testing performed with a thermal vacuum chamber that permits a considerable energy savings compared to current test procedures available. The terminology selected for this test procedure is "partially flooded mode".
