Traditional SONET/SDH architectures have served carriers well for decades, but with the growth in demand for high-capacity circuits and the drop in bandwidth pricing driven by competitive pressures, it's time to move to a new model. To maximize their opportunity in providing high-capacity circuits, carriers must move to networks that incorporate fully interoperable network and control plane intelligence. Such intelligence will automate the discovery and provisioning of available circuits to speed service provisioning, increase customer satisfaction, and improve profits. While the migration to automated transport networks will take time and a lot of effort from equipment vendors, standards organizations, and carriers, this technology will eventually improve carrier business models across the board.
