The cost of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in finishing pigs

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in growing pigs has been estimated to cost the US swine industry $361.85 million annually.1 Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) emerged in the US in 2013 and has also had substantial financial impacts on the swine industry.2 It is currently unknown what cost PEDV, individually and combined with PRRSV, imposes on infected lots of growing pigs. The objective of this study was to determine the financial and production impacts of PRRSV and PEDV on finishing pig performance.
