For the last 20 years, one of the main aims of turbine designers has been to make turbines more acceptable to neighbors and the public in general, by reducing the sound generated by the turbines. Initially, the focus was on control of the mechanical noise generated by components within the nacelle. This now well under control, the focus has shifted towards the aerodynamic noise from the blades. On fixed speed turbines, lowering the sound will often mean permanent sacrifice of energy production, due to the inherent compromises between optimal energy capture and a low sound emission.
