Barium alginate controlled release capsules containing swine semen were developed to improve the preservation time of the spermatic cells and maximize the efficiency of a single artificial insemination procedure. In fact a single instrumental insemination with diluted and refrigerated seminal material does not guarantee fecundation of oocytes, therefore the standard artificial insemination procedure with refrigerated commercial semen needs two or three instrumental inseminations to ensure high spermatozoa concentration in uterus during the physiological, prolonged ovulation time. In this work a semen controlled release formulation was in vivo evaluated A protocol was developed to compare the reproductive performances of three fecundation treatments: natural mating, the standard artificial insemination procedure with refrigerated commercial semen and a single instrumental insemination with controlled release encapsulated semen.
