THE USE OF PORCILIS~(R) APP AGAINST A FIELD INFECTION WITH APP FRENCH BIOVAR 2 ISOLATE

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App), the pathogen responsible for porcine pleuropneumonia, can be differentiated into two biovars: biovar 1 (NAD dependent) and biovar 2 (NAD independent). App biovar 2 can induce clinical disease with sudden death, negative effects on growth and condemnation at the slaughterhouse. In a 300 sow farrow-to-finishing farm in Brittany, an acute respiratory syndrome suddenly appeared in fatteners of around 80 kg liveweight, managed on an all in/all out system. Within a few days, mortality had reached 8%. Affected pigs showed fever (41 deg C), coughing, dyspnoea (in some pigs, orthopnoea), severe respiratory symptoms and anorexia. In many of the pigs, death occurred shortly after the first signs of disease, sometimes without premonitory symptoms.
