For precision AWJ machining, nozzle health must be monitored closely and periodically because it governs the edge quality and productivity. Visualization of jet geometry, speed measurements, and characterization of erosion patterns induced on workpieces were conducted to determine the effects of nozzle health on the cutting performance. The objective was to develop online diagnostic devices for monitoring the nozzle health. As the nozzle health deteriorates, the jet spread increases while the abrasive speed decreases. Maximum cutting performance mandates that the nozzle be maintained in good health. Even a slightly chipped orifice or worn mixing tube could lead to inferior performance.
