Weathering of rocks in soil budgets of trace metals

Budgets of As, Cd, Cu and Pb were measured in a small agricultural in the Bohemian Massif (central Europe). The weathering flux of the trace elements was calculated from the weathering rates of the bedrocks and the mean concentrations of the elements in the gneiss and its regolith. The input of the trace elements due to chemical weathering is compared to the hydrological, mechanical and anthropogenic fluxes. The results indicate that the inputs due to chemical weathering are usually one to two orders of magnitude lower than the other inputs and outputs. Therefore, chemical weathering rate of gneiss is relatively unimportant factor in the surface budgets of the trace elements. Anthropogenic inputs due to agricultural fertilization and industrial and traffic emissions and mechanical erosion are the fluxes that control the present budget of the trace elements in agricultural countryside in central Europe. The trace elements accumulate in regolith due to high input from atmosphere and fixation of the elements in the regolith.
