Technicians can play a critical role in helping to obtain quality samples that will provide accurate diagnoses of various inflammatory and neoplastic conditions for their patients. Understanding the importance of proper sample collection and preparation and being able to identify the cytological characteristics of the common tumors can help you to facilitate early intervention for possible treatment options. The easiest and most cost-effective way to obtain a cytologic sample is with a fine needle aspirate (FNA). This same technique is used for aspirates of the skin and subcutis, deep and superficial lymph nodes, spleen, liver, thyroid glands, prostate, and intracavitary masses.
