Work on titanium particulate metal matrix composites dates back to the 1960's [1], however there is continued interest in producing titanium with high stiffness. A variety of methods can be used to produce these composites and the merits of these have been discussed. Encouragingly, improvements in mechanical properties have been noted and these include improvements in stiffness, strength, fatigue and creep resistance whilst retaining some ductility. The cost-effective manufacture of titanium MMCs will enable their use in a wide range of applications in the aerospace, automotive and chemical industries where there are requirements for medium temperature, light, stiff structures, with both wear and corrosion resistance.
