The treatment of different types of spent potlining using a leaching strategy

Spent potlining (SPL),a waste material from the aluroinium smelting process.is classified as a hazardous waste because of its cyanide and high fluoride content.It is a mixture of carbon,bath material and refractory brick.A process for treating SPL,using a series of aqueous and acid washes performed at ambient temperatures,has been developed to produce a benign residue and recover several valuable products.This paper describes the similar chemical processes taking place in the treatment of two different types of SPL by the leaching process.
