Will a preparation stage facilitate the implementation of RCM? A case study at a Swedish hydro power plant

Maintenance activities have to be a part of an overarching maintenance programme to ensure a systematic course of action. A well-known maintenance programme is reliability centred maintenance (RCM). RCM is based on a logical scheme for development of efficiently scheduled preventive maintenance programmes for complex equipment, based on priority of maintenance activities due to the risk involved. An RCM programme generates several advantages such as greater safety, improved operating performance and maintenance cost-effectiveness. These are all benefits that could be of vital importance for a plant's survival in the long run. This paper's emphasis is on the necessary management activities to obtain a well functioning RCM programme before implementing RCM within a plant. To thoroughly deal with the preparation phase is something many organisations often neglect caught up in the spirit of starting a new programme. therefore, something many organisations often neglect caught up in the spirit of starting a new programme. Therefore, managerial obstacles turning up during the implementation are frequently occurring. To facilitate for companies. a preparation stage is proposed to increase the possibilities for a successful implementation of RCM.
