ECN has developed an anode supported thin electrolyte flat plate cell manufacturing route using conventional ceramic processing techniques. Tapecasting is used to fabricate the thick NiO-YSZ anode substrates. An anode interface layer ranging between 3 and 10 μm and an 8YSZ electrolyte layer ranging between 3 and 30 μm are applied by means of screen printing. The cathode is currently a conventional composite SLM-YSZ double layer. Lab scale tests on 5 X 5 cm~2 cells gave maximum power densities of 470 mW/cm~2 at 750°C and 610 mW/cm~2 at 800°C, using air as oxidant and humidified hydrogen as fuel (low fuel utilisation). A scaled up cell with a diameter of 12 cm had a stable performance over 500 hrs at 750°C with a maximum power density of 260 mW/cm~2 at 30% fuel utilisation.
