This paper is an introduction of a Main-memory Database System, ZEDB,which is suitable for time-critical transaction processing applications. The design of ZEDB is derived from our need of rapid data access supports for telecommunication applications. We present here in detail key aspects of our design, such as the architecture of ZEDB, the real-time processing engine, the main-memory relation manager, concurrency and safety strategy. The scalability of ZEDB for parallelism is also discussed. ZEDB is built in our application to work with a commercial RDBMS as its back-end data warehouse.
