The present state of the Russian Internet is explicitly discussed (providers, channels, users, information resources); some statistical data is given. The Russian Internet forms now about 1 per cent of the whole, but it grows rapidly. One of the best tools for investigating the Russian Internet is a database developed and maintained in the Laboratory for Network Information Resources at the Russian Academy of Sciences. This base now contains more than 16,000 records. The main features of the database are its completeness; regular visual monitoring and permanent automatic monitoring of resources' availability and actuality; hand-made annotations; user-friendly interface; detailed tree-like index with 200+ rubrics. There are complex search facilities using Russian morphology. The database became an information basis for the printed catalogues, thematic guides and reviews. In the final part, the impact of the Internet on school and higher education is being analysed. As the author's 20-years experience shows, the new generation is much more ready to live and work with network applications than that of their parents. Some of his students take part in the researches of his laboratory. They create Web pages with special effects, describe information resources, update the database. Their analytic reviews and thematic guides were published in the most popular Russian computer magazines.
