Using Lotus Notes to offer patent information on the intranet: the file cabinet is now searchable

The Enhanced Technical Awareness programme in 3M Information Services has, as its objective, the creation and implementation of a set of tools that allow 3M knowledge workers to better manage the patent literature and other information delivered to them by Information Services. These tools utilise the features and capabilities of Lotus Notes to create and maintain databases of those information items identified as important to retain for current and future use by a 3M work group, technical or business programme, or business unit. New information that comes out worldwide is sent to one or more database 'editors' that identify those items of importance to the project; thus each database maintains its currency and relevance. The ability to view, sort, search and share the captured information has been deemed extremely valuable by those currently using the patent databases. More casual users desiring a simplified interface will be able to access some of the content via the Information Services ATLAS Web site.
