This paper proposes a five-phase six-leg voltage source inverter (VSI) and the corresponding SVPWM strategy to improve the performance of the motor drive. Compared to traditional five-phase VSI, the DC voltage utilization increases by 17.56% and the fault tolerance is improved. In addition, the proposed VSI has the capability of the zero-axis current control. Compared to five-phase open-winding VSI, the number of power devices is reduced to nearly half in proposed VSI. The simulation and experimental results are presented to prove the validity of the proposed topology and modulation strategy.
